I would tell him to sell it first, then come back and buy your truck.

Trade him the truck like he didn't have anything to trade.
Unless your truck is worth $3,000, yeah, uh, no.
Do what you want. It's your stuff. These things are easy to work on but drink gas like it's water. Neat old car. Would be a great project but I wouldn't do it as a daily driver.
