Residential water heater needs replaced

Don't know of a supply house that does this, but you are 100% correct about it being the same heater.

The sites that talk about the sacrificial anodes say they are identical heaters, just with bigger or extra anodes. The tank won't start rusting until the anode is consumed. One takes six years on average. Two takes 12, and so forth. Allegedly, if you replace your anode every 6 years, your heater will likely last much longer. About $115 to DIY.

I'd really love to hear from someone that has done this.

If you can find the same brand and size heater, it will make the install much easier.
use the flexible sharkbite hoses and a flex gas line, its not hard to do.

if you have to use a different brand, size and put a pedestal under it, then you will have alot of work to modify the chimney and water and gas lines.

Federal laws changed a couple months ago. The Rheem Marathon electric water heater was way more efficient than anything else on the market. The new federal regs made them illegal to sell here. Now they are only available in Canada.

It was a giant plastic insulated R2D2 with the only metal bits being the heating elements and the pipes going in and out.

Think about one of the new space age thermos bottles that you can fill with hot coffee today, seal it up and get a steaming hot cup of coffee tomorrow.
