I agree with this.

Not sure why you couldn’t argue that as some sort of defense. He grabbed you first and violated your space, you punched him one time to make him back off. Seems reasonable to me unless I’m way too optimistic.

I wouldn’t worry to much about it honestly, you defend your kid and yourself against someone you saw was a danger. Any judge in good standing would dismiss the case let you go free. Seen it before a few times.

A truck ran me off the road one time. I got him pulled over and came up on this young man driving. I asked him his age and he replied 21,I asked for ID. He pulled out his ID and yes he was 21.I then hit him in the jaw with a foreign object. End of that story.

Unless of course you were a total jack ass to the cop, then you probably won’t be believable as reasonable.
