Honda 3500, cant remember the model. It will run the whole house minus A/C, oven and water heater. I also have a little Yamaha 1000 for when gas starts running low to keep the freezers cold and charge phones etc...
We have just gotten into chickens this year. We also have dogs that would love a chicken snack, so no free ranging.
We (my wife) digs em worms ,grubs, catches grass hoppers, crickets, beatles etc... Along with cutting them some greens, grass, trimmings from the garden, table fair leftovers...

Thanks for replies folks. After some more reading and thinking, I think we are gonna go for the mylar bags and a good seed bank. My wife hates anything that has a single green pea in it, and all of the food buckets have 10-20% of there servings with peas and with all the rice and pasta servings...
