While I like the concept, I've just never been brave enough to buy used cast iron.
No idea what was cooked in it. Lead smelter at one point?
Found a nice skillet one time in a shop. I painted it orange. I intend to shoot it. But if someone wants it.......

I'm with you. As a kid, we used an old cast iron Dutch oven as our lead pot.

Several years ago, there were some boys on a muzzleloader hunt that were camped near us. One of them had some cast iron pots & frying pan he had scavenged at the county landfill a few days before. He had burned them out in their campfire and proceeded to cook in them. I got ill thinking about what their history might have been...

Clean it good. Then turn it upside down over a turkey cooker burner and get it hot enough to melt a bullet on the "top." You'll burn out anything harmful that might remain "inside."

Man I love cast iron cookware! As Palmettomoon said, get it hot enough and it'll be clean. I've had pans glowing red before I threw in a stick of butter then a grouper fillet!

I was at a managed hunt at Piedmont Wildlife Refuge. I found a rusted up cast iron skillet mostly buried in the dirt. I scrubbed it out and burned it out in the campfire. Then I cooked some bacon in it. I still have that skillet.

You really need cast iron and butter to properly "blacken" fish or chicken.
