Made for only a couple of years in the middle 1970's.

You're correct. It's a subcompact .45 ACP semi auto pistol from the 1970s. It was a cool idea back in its day being a small, but hefty .45 autoloader. It was a delayed blowback .45 where the paddle on the back strap (resembles what most would think is a grip safety) would use grip force to slow the slide down to safe pressures before going back. Due to the design it was not the most pleasant pistol to shoot thus its short time of production and it only had a 5 round magazine. Otherwise it's a pretty cool pistol for its day.
 
On a gun with a D.A.O. trigger that requires more than 10 lbs. of pressure to fire it, I'd be OK if they eliminated the front of the trigger guard. (It doesn't need guarding!)
