Not a firearm, but a cool development nonetheless.

It's a "Little Joe Penetrometer”—essentially a hand-held, vertical-profile pistol crossbow. The frame was made from heat-treated aluminum.

Developed by the OSS
during World War II
to possibly compete with suppressed pistols. It flung a dart that had enough mass and a sharp enough broad-head point to pass completely through a uniformed human body at 20 yards!

It was quieter than a suppressed pistol.
But, it was never adopted as a front line spy weapon.

The United Defense M42,
(sometimes known as the Marlin for the company that did the actual manufacturing)
was an American submachine gun used during World War II.

Some 15,000 of them were produced.
