I carry IWB but have noticed that when I take the pistol out at the range that I have to look for the safety and it's not something I can manipulate quickly and effectively during a stressful situation.

Unless you plan to train until taking the safety off is second nature you should not even carry that gun if you are uncomfortable with carrying it with the safety off. In a high stress situation you’ll pull and pull on the trigger trying to figure out why it won’t go bang

Consider carrying an empty pistol and a loaded mag on opposite sides of the carry belt, by FAR safer!
