He had a criminal record, a questionable military career, and was still was given security clearance despite this fact. The Navy building he had access to was testing Extremely Low Frequency weapons. His former Buddhist roommate last saw him three months prior to the shooting and said he was fine psychologically.

Then in August he saw Navy doctors (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/09/17/aaron-alexis-heard-voices_n_3940187.html) and told them he heard voices in his head and these voices were so loud that it was keeping him up at night.

He was staying in hotels and on multiple nights, he went knocking on other people's doors trying to find the voices (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/20/u...d-gunmans-path-to-tragedy.html?pagewanted=all).

Some would write him off as schizophrenic, but schizophrenia is extremely rate to develop after the age of 30 and usually occurs between the ages of 18-25 in males. Alexis was 34.
