Growing up poor, what food do you eat from time to time?

I ate a bowl of Navy beans with Chow Chow yesterday.

Mom used to make cocoa syrup and biscuits for Saturday, WHAT A TREAT FOR US YOUNGUNS BACK THEN.

Crackling corn bread crumbled in a bowl with milk poured over,sometimes we used buttermilk.
Mullet and mullet roe fried.

Not poor, but still soaking them dried beans

Can't forget the iconic Peanut Butter the po food of choice, at least 6 days a week something with peanut butter. Good for breakfast lunch and supper.

With cane molasses ,still have one from time to time. Put a little sugar on it for a treat.

Lots of frozen pizzas, ramen noodles, baked chicken rice & beans.

When it got bad we'd have chit on a shingle (ground beef w/ gravy on toast)

You learn to be a creative cook when you dont have much to work with.

I loved fat bread. And I raise my boys on it. Just any old bread, normally those cheap unsliced loaves slathered in mayo and fried.

Not necessarily because we were that poor , but I remember my Dad bring lunch when fishing. Sardines saltines and a can of bake beans.

We had an old wooden canoe we’d use to get to certain places in the river to fish, never fished out of it , just used to get to places then we’d

Get out and wade. We’d meet back at the canoe for lunch. Also, buying ice was unheard of, we’d use the same froze jugs of water all year.

hot dogs, speghetti, mom cooked alot (chicken and pork chops)

wasnt poor but we didnt splurge either

Sugar sandwiches, butter sandwiches, ketchup sandwiches, basically anything in “loafabread”, LOL
