I ditched my Wolfskin Expedition internal frame pack for an external frame alice. It may seem strange to use a $40.00 issue alice pack instead of a $300.00 one, but I honestly find I can carry more weight, more comfortably with the alice. The external frame is more versitile also. My two centavos.

this may not be the best set up but its what im comfortable with.

THIS! Whatever you plan to take, pack it up and try it out! This gets you used to the weight and the items and where everything is in your pack, and helps to scale down some of the things you thought you needed but really don't. That way you can take them out, leave the extra weight at home or replace it with more food/water/ammo, and still be comfortable enough to get by. The only way to know how long and how far you can carry something is to carry it.
