2024 garden thread

I was planning on putting some of these in, then found some info about them having a neurotoxin, annonacin. It seems to possibly only be an issue with long-term consumption, but ultimately not a risk I wanted to take. YMMV.

I still made sassafras tea even though the surgeon general said it was a carcinogen. I guess if I was fed it like they do the rats in labs possibly might cause harm but I think you would have to eat a whole lot of pawpaws to do any kind of harm. The leaves from them are pretty good insect repellent.

We have liftoff. Only took two weeks to sprout!

I did 10 cuttings of blueberrys (some with root-tone some w/o to see if any difference) and put 30 black krim seedling pots on the heating pad yesterday.
We have limited space in our current house/yard, but have a patch with 2 blackberries, 2 raspberries and 4 blueberries, all different varieties. They are all now 4 years established. We have 20 acres in NW GA we will be building on soon, so we'll be doing lot's of cuttings to populate several acres up there...can't wait!

Yesterday I completed getting my grow lights set up. I have the lights set on a switch and added 2 receptacles for my heat mats. It was late last night that I got finished but by next weekend I’ll have it loaded with tomatoes and peppers. It’s taking time to get everything set up like I want but next year I’ll be ready. Next task is to expand the garden size and install a deer/rabbit fence.

My locus for gardening has been to get rid of the majority of my grass so i dont have to mow.because mowing is a waste of time. So i burned off last fall's pinestraw to prep an area for the wildflowers i currently have growing. The pinecones became biochar that went into the chicken composter. You can also use it in your cats litter to help keep the smell down

Looks like everyone has grapes, rasberry, peach ect plants in for the new season. I might get some grapes to grow as sun shades for the rear of the house

The American persimon cutting finally pushed out shoots. Ive had it sitting since december. Apparently its really hard to get persimons cuttings to root, we'll see
