I gave the small parts their second boil this evening and already a deep grey black that is very even has developed. I noted the humidity in the garage dropped from 70% this morning to 50% this evening and the temperature is down a bit. So, all the parts are in the cardboard rust box with a hot coffee cup of tap water to make humidity. I'll change out to hot water again in an hour and do the third boil before bed time and a fourth boil in the AM. With luck, by Sunday or Monday this one will be ready for final assembly and photos.

All the blueing is done. As you see from the photos, the lever, trigger plate and foreend cap came out very nice. At 62 Cougar has a few minor issues with her "skin" but overall the facelift is successful and I think she'll be a knockout in the woods. Both in looks and performance.

All the screw heads were polished in the drill press with a single cut file and sandpaper then dunked twice in Birchwood Casey Super Blue. They are resting in Hoppes #9 gun oil as are the small metal parts just blued below.

Final assembly should be Sat evening or Sun AM and if the weather holds, I'll take it to the range for a sight in and 50 yard work out and report back here with pics of the final product and the targets.

Everything looks so satiny smooth. Can't wait to see it all together. Your Marlin soup made my mouth water ;)

Thanks. I need to find a Win 94 project. Its been a while since I tweaked one of those.

I was looking at a 94AE the other day. I know not old but I LIKE the angle ejection. Makes a scope a nice fit. I also really liked how slim it was. I did NOT like the lever safety on it tho. As short as the stock was and the angle of the grip on the lever it was uncomfortable to keep the lever pressed up against the spring tension of the safety. I decided to stick with Marlin.

Here are 5 of the 10 final photos. I have to blue the butt plate screws and hope to get it to the range but thats about it for this rifle. I'll put five more photos below.

This is a working refinish. There are some flaws, the base gun is 62, its not going to be perfect if the work is to be done by the owner at home. However, it looks great, it is well fitted and ready to be sighted in and go stalking quietly to the kill in the woods, get wet in the stand and get barked by bumps and scrapes.

Today gets this Cougar some range time side by side with a scoped Marlin 336A (shortened barrel) that my sister is going to use during deer season. I'll be sure to post up some targets. If the sights are pretty close, I won't drift them around at all, leave that to the new owner. But, I would like to see how it shoots at 100 yards on some of the steel swingers...I'll bet they ring every time!

Kinda neat, this old gale is going out to strut her stuff on Mothers Day! I'll bet this rifle has been the Mother Shepherd on quite a few successful hunts thru the years.

Awesome DIY job and worthy of a pro! I really like the rust blue job you did it is very fitting of such a noble woods rifle. The Pilkingtons rust blue you used, is that what you consider one of the best rust blue mixes? Anyhow, I'm awaiting a range report as I'm sure others are. You sir did that rifle right and congrats on your hard work and attention to details.
