Why do posts get shut down so quicly and hats handed out?

Why does it hurt the mods so bad to see two men having an argument? We've been doing it since the dawn of time. I hate seeing good members get "Shut Up" because they hurt someone's feelers. I can understand not letting this place become a free for all but damn.
