How is the milsurp market these days?

There was kind of a sticky black goo in there. Smelled bad too. The good news is that the goo somehow preserved the bore from rusting
The best metal and wood protection from years gone by smells odd and is pita to clean out. I had a Russian capture German k98k that smelled of gasoline and horsehair from the goo they it on it

I used Halogen work lights and it sweats out. it work great without using any chemicals to strip it.
I had 3 of them focused on certain parts and worked my way down the rifle. I'd just check it every 15 mins or so and wipe off all the cosmoline that sweated out.

So excited…..I got to shoot an authentic 1836 R. Johnson .54cal pistol today. Very smooth shooter with lots of smoke. https://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/search/object/nmah_1300736

She was issued to the US Army in 1837 (still has cartouches and inspector’s stamps), and this one was converted to percussion cap for use in the US Civil War. She ended up coming home with me…..
