hand held radio novice

just received a pair of Baofeng handhelds

someone who has experience want to share some knowledge to a newbie?

PM me

thanks
Download a program called “CHIRP” and buy the interface cable to program it. They have a lot of frequencies in their database you can preload.

Legally, you need a license to talk on some frequency bands (eg HAM) but you can listen all you want.

Also check out you tube. Good info there!

As someone already mentioned, download CHIRP and get a programming cable if you don't already have one. That's much easier than spending hours pushing programming from the front buttons.

RadioReference.com is a good place to start if you're looking for things to listen to:

People will disagree.

My Baofeng is useless to me. I'm not going to get a license because I hate the gubmint. Using it to listen doesn't work either. I can't get Dekalb County pd frequencies to use it as a police scanner. Up to this point it's completely useless.

I do not have 1000 hours to learn how to talk to my neighbor illegally in an emergency. I also don't have 1000 hours to show my neighbor how to talk to me.

Currently the Taliban has used basic b*tch Motorola FRS handheld radios to defeat the the largest two Empires on the planet in the most treacherous terrain on the planet.

Get the Walker Razor Slims ear pro w/$33 walkie talkie attachment and have perfect team comms out to 600 yards instantly.

It's the KISS rule..Keep it simple.

So it's useless to you based on your preferences, biases, and planned uses...just to clarify. :)

Baofeng is a great beginning HAM radio. Literally you both type in a simple freq and then under 20 seconds your talking to each other (with a HAM license legally)

So many videos

I would start off with FRS radios if your newbie while you study for your Ham license.

go watch a lot of videos so much good info on youtube!

Good luck!
