Oxygen, Water, Shelter, Food, in that order.
Bear44 has it right. You need enough stores to hold you over to a harvest and hope that harvest can hold you over to the next.
As far as hunting and gathering, Anyone that can do elementary math can fiqure out that's not going to work. There are 11 million people in the state Georgia and 1.5 million deer, 50 to 75 lbs of meat per deer, so the best case scenario is a little over 10 lbs of meat per person.
Squirrels and little birds ? Sure if you are the only one with that idea.
The earth cannot sustain its current population in hunter gatherer mode for even a few months.
In the great depression the natural resources on the USA were wiped out and they only had a population of about 125 million in the whole USA. Now there 350 million +/-.
Keep in mind that people weren't near as dependent on "the grid" in the 30s as we are now.
So if you don't intend to farm...

Something to keep in mind is that there are a lot fewer people that know how to hunt, gather and grow our own. Their only option for survival will be to take from those of us that can. That's why the weapons and skills to defend what you have will be so important.

Agreed, Can you imagine the exodus out of urban areas in search of potable water about a week after the tap stops flowing ? The bottled water and bottled drinks will be depleted. I would imagine most would wait too long and end up drinking urban surface water and not have the strength to get out of town at that point.
Its a terrible thing to think about but it has to be considered that the lack of potable water will very quickly reduce the competition for food resources.
Everyone serious about this should locate springs and bored wells that they can access without a fight

They say that on average cities only have enough food to feed their population for three days. They'll run out of food and water at about the same time. I think a lot of urbanights will kill each other before they ever get to rural areas, but the ones that survive that long will typically be bad news.
