Land Rover Discovery I and maybe Discovery II.

Put in a Chevy 350 and GM transmission and you have an awesome off road vehicle.

You can get a Disco with a blown Rover engine (piece of junk), for under a grand...

I know where one of these can be found pretty cheap as well.
