Competitive shooting

You wont be able to compete with the bodyguard at most matches. Minimum caliber is 9mm/38special for IDPA and USPSA. The glock 17 you mentioned would be a great gun to at least get you started shooting matches.
That's not exactly true. If he chooses to shoot in BUG, he can run mouse gun calibers but will have to download his magazines to five rounds.

I see that they have a tactical rifle match scheduled on 4/13. Has anyone here ever shot one of their rifle matches?

EDIT- There are some videos up on youtube. These look like a ton of fun: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=cherokee gun club rifle match

I've shot them. Don't expect a super high round count but the stages are solid. Most matches now include a shotgun due to ammo cost/availability. There's even one weirdo that shows up with a lever action from time to time.
Excuse the 'special effects'. There was a 13 year old running the camera. ;-)

Excellent. I think I'll be giving next month's match a shot.

Keeping that lever gun fed looks excruciating!

Can you shoot bug with a pocket sized 9mm if you only load 5 rounds in the magazine?

Absolutely. Just let the SO know what you're doing. Alternatively, you could shoot your gun in SSP (Stock Service Pistol) and take your lumps. You will need a strong side belt holster and magazine pouch. You are not allowed to draw from the pocket, small of back, appendix, shoulder rig, etc. Its a safety rule, not anyone trying to tell you how you should carry.

I would get a glock 34 for most stock competition matches. That is whst most
of the people I compete with use. And the ones who don't usually have to have special classes invented for there slightly inferior weapons ( as far as competition is concerned) glocks are simple and dependable and affordable.
