I have a cousin who, after HS graduation, left NC for AK. He learned to fly and was a bush pilot for 40 years before retiring and rocking on the porch.

Your son is living the life, my family reunion is in Alaska in July, my 3 brothers are all ready there, I'm not going I have been to Elmemdorf 3x with the military, plus my wife n kids said no way they don't get along with 2 of my Brothers.
I was stationed at Elmendorf AFB with the 6981st ESG from 1970 - 1972. Loved it there. Walked to downtown Anchorage and back a couple of times a week. Could see all kind of animal life on the base. Moose are huge. Bears are best seen at a distancce. The last remaining Air Force AN/FLR-9 antenna is there but it's not being used any longer. Monster antenna for the HF radio spectrum and radio direction finding in the HF Mayday/SOS frequencies.
