I know this forum is visited by the most knowledgeable optics folks around. I am looking for a good optic for short range shooting, say out to 200 yards, for my SR556. I have been looking at Eotech, Sig Optics and Vortex dots and I guess tactical scopes. I'm trying to keep it under$500. The highest magnification I have considered thus far is 4x. Any light you shed would be greatly appreciated!

Big fan of the Vortex Sparc and the Leupold Mark AR 1.5-4X20.
for that range a 1-4 would be perfect. love my leupold VX hog 1-4x. if you want a bit more magnification, the primary arms 1-6x is supposed to be really nice.
Like my aimpoint pro, almost bought one of those burris skulltac models with the red dot on top. Bit over your price range but it was pretty cool with the illumination and adjustable magnification. Not sure what opinions here are on it but I wouldn't mind having it if I was hunting with it.

I do not know what you are looking for but I just got a Redfield Revolution TAC 3-9x40 and put it on my 6.8spc. Very clear exposed turrets tracks well and around $250. Assembled by Leupold at their Oregon facility with a lifetime warranty. I read a a lot of reviews on the revolution line before I bought will definitely buy another for my 5.56.

i use a Leupold vx-1 3-9x40 personally and its reliable at least out to 200 yards, it cost about $230 online
if you have more cash to spend then you can go up to vx-2 or vx-3
if you have more cash to spend then you can go up to vx-2 or vx-3
Used ACOG. Best AR optic.
