Are solar powered generators worth a poop?

Depending upon the size, they do great for camping or emergency short term with only limited power needs.

Long term or need a lot of power, then probably not the best solution.

Also can do well when needing to be quiet.

Quiet is king. Pair one with an ultra quiet inverter generator and you're good to go. And there are several vendors that make generators with direct DC out to fast charge the batteries now.

I run this set up with an extra battery bank... seems to be working well.


But I also have a back up Gas generator for the rest of the house if it's a long term power down.

Check out the Bluetti brand. They have several models for different needs. I have one that I use here in south Florida and love it. They are easy to use and recharge, very quiet, can use them indoors and best of all, you don't have to worry about running out of gas.

Then a decent one will work, just pick out the fridge first, then get a power unit able to handle it.

Home Depot and Lowes both carry Jackery now, along with a couple other brands.

I’m trying out this solar thing with the greenhouse I’m building. Ceiling Exhaust fan, mid-level mini fan, and lights will all work off solar panels with battery back-up. We shall see.
