Ha, this is what our football team's trainer kept for bleeding/ broken noses. Usually only happened to linemen.
Yup...I know a lot of trainers that keep several of them in their gear for exactly that reason.
 
We've sent em' in care packages to Marines & Soldiers in the desert for years, a very close friend of mine was in the Marines and they used them in Iraq and Afghanistan to control the bleeding from bullet wounds till they were evacuated to a field hospital.

They've been fairly common in the field for years.
 
I had an ER doc(just back from the sandbox) tell my wide to use maxi pads on my back after surgery, it was bleeding thru 1/2" gause pads but the maxi pads held the flow back.
Now I have some in every kit I iwn.
