I have owned several and they are sweet vehicles and have a place in a lot of our hearts, but the resale prices are crazy... The last one I had was an 2001 wrangler sport w/6cyl it got around 17 hwy was uncomfortable on long trips and as a daily driver was just stooopid! Trips to the grocery store for our family of 5 was an adventure when it came time to load it with groceries so we usually took the SUV..There some definite pros they are a blast off-road..I still don't get the resale prices though.

So aside from the obvious cons why do jeeps continue to be so popular?

found this most are correct,,
pros..

  • Classic design / unique look
  • Can be fully customized to your liking - lots of options & aftermarket items
  • Unique styling serves as both an SUV and a convertible
  • 4x4 capabilities - can handle any road anywhere
  • Height advantage over most cars - great visibility
  • Good heating system
  • A simply constructed vehicle that's easy to repair
  • Short wheelbase, powerful drivetrain, body size & tight turning ratios all great for off-roading
  • Small size & light weight, make it a cinch to swing into tight spots
  • Great vehicle for all seasons ..unless it's soft top and it's really cold.
  • Jeep fraternity of friends for life
  • Rugged and durable - lasts for many years & many miles
  • Handles well on pavement, mud, sand, snow, water, etc.
  • Appeals to adults & teens alike
  • Durable interior made for weathering the elements
  • Fun to drive - turns every drive into an adventure
  • Excellent resale value $$$$$
  • Parts are plentiful and cheap for repairs
  • American made

cons..

  • Weak acceleration, especially on interstates
  • Awkward ingress - requires high step in
  • Lack of cargo space for luggage, groceries, etc.
  • Noisy - road, wind, engine, and tire noise
  • Firm suspension results in a stiff, bumpy ride
  • Rear visibility can be a challenge with the top on
  • Slow steering
  • Tall, boxy profile is not aerodynamic meaning greater wind resistance & wind noise poor mpg.
  • Uncomfortable front seat positions for taller drivers
  • Everything is an "option" - carpet, steel doors, rear seat, etc.
  • Outdated appearance of gages and switchgear
  • Difficult getting in and out of rear seat
  • Even in the summer, the air is cooler than you'd think - must always bring a jacket
  • Small, flimsy doors
  • Rear-view mirror is in the line of vision for taller drivers
  • Windshield wipers remain in the upright position when "off"
  • Base sound system is less than adequate
  • If you're riding without the top/sides, you must always be prepared for rain - plastic bags are a lifesaver for your gear
  • Cramped rear seating
  • Lack of side mirrors when you take off the doors
  • Short wheelbase makes highway driving rougher than in larger vehicles
  • Uninsulated roof agin winter weather can be rough.
  • No lockable trunk/cargo area
  • Less practical in colder climates
  • It's only a 4-seater and back seat ride is a bit bouncy off road
  • Poor fuel economy (typical of SUVs)

and yet we all still love them...lol

There are NO CHEAP Jeep Wranglers to be had out there. The square headlight models will still bring $5,000. And the CJs bring crazy money if they're not rusted out.

Just buy an International Scout.
They can be had cheap (unless of course you bought mine cause its GOLD!) and are basically what jeeps wish they could be when they grow up!

Here's my 'ol gal:

Relatively cheap, reliable and easily customized by anyone is the big attraction. The market is flooded with overpriced Jeeps with mall crawler lifts and tires.
The worst are the ones cobbled together with crap they had laying around and then promoted as rock crawlers for 15-20k.
I can build a Rubicon killer and better equipped for 10k or less including buying a stock TJ.
