44 special

Are you planning on loading JHPs, or lead bullets? If you use the Hornady 300gr XTP, they have 2 crimping grooves. You'll probably be able to use the upper crimp groove with .44 Mag brass, solving your OAL issue. Lots of guys are using 270-320gr bullets in the 77/44. Here's an article: http://www.gunblast.com/Ruger-77-44.htm

I really wouldn't want to see you loading hot loads in .44Spl brass. Too much of a chance of them being used in the wrong gun, plus less .44Spl brass for us .44Spl guys!

just out of curiosity, why the 44 special brass vs. magnum? are you looking for hot loads or subsonic loads?

the reason I ask is if you are looking for subsonic 44 special loads, then look around on silencertalk for load info:

there's lots of info there on subsonic 44 loads. pretty easy if you stick with heavier bullets. lots of guys with integral 44 77/44 rifles on there. I have a 96/44 that I want to get threaded eventually and use a 45 can on it (subsonic only). my plan was to load heavy (300+gr) bullets in either mag or spec brass and have some fun...

if you are just looking for hot loads for a rifle or pistol that only accepts 44 special ammo, then you are barking up the wrong tree, it's a good way to blow something up. :)

well if I go with a 77/44 it wont allow for a very long OAL from the magnums so the 44 special would give me more room to play with
