2016 Chrysler 200, P0420 code

Check for vacuum or exhaust leaks before the cat. If no leak is found then 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼

Most of the time P0420 pops up is when the downstream 02 sensor detects more fuel fumes getting past the catalytic converter. TL;DR the converter is not doing its job as efficiently as it should as it’s failing.

2 ways around the problem.. replace the cat or add a spacer on the downstream 02 sensor and ride it out..

Ultimately you’ll end up replacing the cat. You can install a O2 sensor extender to trick the sensor for a while, repeatedly reset the code, or ignore the check engine light.

The sensitivity of a O2 sensor is pretty amazing, but when the sensor is in the hot exhaust airflow it converts whatever black magic into a voltage from .1 to .9 volts. When you either increase the efficiency of the cat by cleaning it, installing a spacer to reduce its sensitivity, ultimately you will end up replacing the cat.

You can push that off by a year or so by cleaning it or installing a spacer.
