There was some promotion where school kids could bring in the tabs, and the school exchange them for supplies.

Back the glass bottles, school fundraisers were bottle drivers, where everyone canvassed their neighborhood and brought the bottles to school, and newspaper drives, when most people still read a newspaper, they would save them, bundle them up, and take them to the school to sell,

Made sense with pull-tabs, since the alternative was to find them on the ground everywhere.
With pop-tops, they never come off unless for donation. So what's the point?
 
Paper oil cans were preceded by metal cans and bottles that had a spout and cap ---
One of my chores was to refill the bottles from the 55 gal drum of oil - It was a hand cranked pump that screwed into the drum bung --
Usually only 30 wt detergent or non-detergent oil at the gas pump island - other bulk oils were inside -- 1949-50 fairfax county va --
