Did he buy it from the custom maker? The top isn't my style, still looks great, but I'm digging the legs though, any more pics?

I suspect it is a plywood or MDF core veneered with another wood. If it were solid throughout, with the cross-grain pattern shown, normal seasonal expansion and contraction would eventually break it apart. Several coats of good varnish, equally applied to top and bottom should do the trick. The first coat or two should be thinned.
