Some people are beyond helping

I just talked to a manager of a homeless shelter the other day,
about a friend of mine who is homeless (and alcoholic, and lazy, and unwilling to lift a finger to help himself when other people are willing to give him charity and take care of him.) The shelter manager confirmed what I always knew --that some people just don't want to lift themselves up and take advantage of an opportunity to change their lives. Instead, consciously or subconsciously, they want to destroy their lives and their bodies, and they will make every possible bad decision so that they end up dead or in jail eventually.
They refuse to steer off of that path that leads to hell.

You know the expression "it is better to light a candle than curse the darkness?"
Many homeless people don't want a candle they will not accept a candle.
Furthermore, if you gave them a candle and a book of matches they'll leave it on the table and walk away.
And if you force them to take a candle and matches,
they'll stand on the street corner to sell the candle & the matches for two dollars,
and go buy themselves a pack of smokes.
