Smoking using Hickory nuts

I was at a country store and saw hickory chips for cheap so I bought a bag. The old boy checking me out says he walks to work and passes a big old hickory tree and picks up the nuts and uses them to smoke with.
Anybody ever heard of this or tried using hickory nut’s instead of chips?

They work fine, good flavor, but don't overdo it. The meat may turn out slightly darker than usual due to the oil they contain.

I’d stick to the chips… if it were great, they’d be on the shelf
