I would rather not have the safety hole if given a choice, because it serves no purpose for me, but don’t care if it has one. I’ve owned lots of them and all have been just fine. Just a tool category for me, I guess.

If I were more of a collector I would look at it differently.

… if they’d put in their for sale S&W revolver ad that it’s got that hideous safety lock zit. No way I’m buying another of those (got one for EDC that I wouldn’t cry if it got lost). Wasted time looking.

Other than it being ugly , have you ever had an issue with the lock thing? I have a 637, with one and have never had an issue( sub 500 rounds thru it). It sometimes ends up in my carry rotation.
