Is there any reason to get an i7 processor over an i5? everyone seems to think the i7 never gets used to its full potential and its better to get an i5 and upgrade more often rather than forking out the extra money for an i7 and hoping it last longer.

Depends on what you are doing with it. General office stuff and web browsing - No.
CAD or surface rendering? Yes.

general work and browsing

some video editing(final cut)

For gaming gpu >cpu, assuming sufficient memory. whats your card?

Couldn't hurt to go with the i7, specially with FC. Cant be to much of a price difference.

Even the lastest games still really don't benefit from more than 2 cores and work best with higher Mhz CPU's and a fast video card.

General work and browsing you can use just about any CPU released in the last 5 years.

Video editing/Final cut on the other hand would benefit from more cores, along with more RAM (8GB+).
