how do you know what primers to get for a 38 special and a 45 colt ?

.38 special is small pistol primer and .45 colt is large

What they said. When you look at the bottom of a case you can tell e definite difference between small and large size primers. Just remember to buy pistol instead of rifle primers and not the magnum primers unless you need them for some caliber.

The pamplets that come with dies provide information about die set-up and some loading data,
but not the basic information necessary to safely and effectively reload. DO NOT ATTEMPT RELOADING
WITHOUT a recent edition of a good reloading manual!

Lyman's 49th Edition is very good,
as well as The ABC's of Reloading.

One is good enough, both would be better!

I use that one. For general reloading information (not so much data) starter reloading books like the ABC's of reloading or metallic reloading are good basic starters.
