Need design ideas...

We are replacing the stone around our fireplace. Should we do a granite or brick veneer? And what color?
Considering painting mantel while we are at it. Need some ideas on color for stone and mantel. The walls are light gray.

I really like the stone veneer, but that obviously depends on the style of our home. It goes up easy, looks good when it is done, and you can purchase it in a variety of color palettes, e.g., different greys, browns, dark light, etc.

I did these for a customer recently. Rebuilt the mantles to get rid of the fancy out dated details. The stone was chosen by a designer. You could see what remnants are available at the local countertop shop.
