Took the evolving mess kit out for lunch in the woods.

Jute string and one strike of the fero to build up a small cooking fire.

Water for coffee, a potato hiding in the ashes and a little baking surprise on the side.
Two eggs are waiting in the wings.

After a good (but small) bed of coals, time for eggs!

The baking was coming along nicely. Rotating and checking it every so often reveled the bottom and sides were done, just needed a little more on the top. Put a little coals on top for the finish.

I picked up a Rothco Vintage Messenger bag for my walkabout bag. Amazon $24
I really like it! It's a good size, not to big, not to small.
Nice wide strap distributes the weight. The bag stays where you put it.

It has a full flap (hiding in this picture) that covers the front two pockets. Those are 16 oz. water bottles in the sides.
I like open compartments, not a hundred zippered spaces that you have to figure out where to put things.

I might try an old water proofing recipe on this bag later.

I use a 249 saw ammo bag as a scavenger bag. But I like that set up for going out in the woods for a few hours.

This little skillet is 1.5 lbs. Just a little more than a loaded AR mag.
Cast Iron cooks and cleans up so nicely it's 'almost' worth the weight.

I'd like to get a set of nesting tin pans some day.

Oh I have no qualms with cast iron, I cook in one almost every day at the house. It just looks heavy to tote around even at 1.5 lbs. That is like 10% of my hiking pack weight.
