Hey everyone I was watching the news this morning and seen where this cold weather throughout the USA has killed at least 12 people. It made me second guess my preparedness A little so I was going to ask if anyone is experienced in cold weather survival what should be your minimum kit for prolong single digit weather here in Georgia mostly for a SHTF scenario but also will be used to hike/camp in winter months in Georgia. I would like for it to be light enough to hike all day with including my other gear (knive, saw, careen, 3days food, pan etc…obviously a hot tent would be Ideal but idk how heavy those are either I’ll be making either two one person kits or one two person kit. If you have and input please let me know. Thanks.

I just too old, fat and broken down to do all that crap anymore.
I had my days of it and now I enjoy the indoor life with heat/ac , cable tv, stocked fridge & freezer, stove, shower , etc…..
That is why I don’t live in the woods or some third world country. I like the comforts of what’s available in a decent up to date house . :)

Everybody who travels some distance away from their home in a motor vehicle during winter should have, in that motor vehicle, enough clothing and gear to either (1) stay with that broken down (non-running. No heater.) vehicle and await help,

or

(2) abandon the vehicle & hike to the nearest place where you can get good shelter indoors.

For me, in my car I always have
--a wind breaker/rain jacket
-- a pretty warm winter coat
--a light sweater, hoodie,
or jogging suit (both top & bottom),

--a knit cap
-- gloves (sometimes they're just work gloves not cold-weather gloves)
-- boots in one size larger than I normally wear to accommodate thick wool hiking socks, which I keep stuffed in one of those boots.
-- sweatpants or pajama bottoms to wear underneath my normal pants I might have on that day.

So is a tarp and sleep system and sleeping pad good enought for the coldest days in Georgia? If so then I’m set😂
I have slept in the Arctic at well below freezing with pretty much that set up. I think you will be ok in Ga. Just remember to elevate your sleeping bag either on an air mattress or some kind of a bed made of local vegetation to get you up off the ground. So put down your pad, then air mattress then a good cold weather sleeping bag or sleeping bag system. In AK we used an Arctic bag and a Mountain bag one inside the other. You had to be careful not to sweat in those things.
