I'm looking at a m1903 that has a early receiver and barrel, I'm curious what a good offer for it would be? What should I be looking for to get an idea of its value.

If not bubba's I think a low numbered should be between $550-$650.

One would think - at least before this last year's nonsense. That's what I've paid for them in the past. But we're seeing garden variety SKS's that cost $200 years ago go for over 600+ dollars now. Some of them more than that...

CMP South Store is closed for now but you may be able to get a decent 1903A3 at the Talladega range store with 7%tax of course. They usually have WWII 1903A3s but sometimes a 1903 will show up.

Serial ranges below 800,000 for Springfields and 250,000 for Rock Islands usually go for less than later models, as they are widely regarded as unsafe to shoot due to soft receivers. You should be able to find one for $600ish

I've known that some Eddystones were suspect because of their receivers but what's the source for this on the 1903s?

Should be able to find one (there was one listed here in. SE GA a few weeks ago ) for about $1,000 to $1,200. That's with a WWII or replacement stock.

An original low number with correct bolt, barrel and stock (to include top handguard) is going to be costly from a knowledgeable seller.

Most cite Hatcher but only a small percentage have actually read his report or understand it.
Yeah, I've read it and I interpret it a little differently than you. For one thing, it was "brittle" receivers, not soft. There were also numerous tests on the rifles and although that some as you state were not newly issued for service, those that had been issued were allowed to stay fielded.
