Knife sharpening

Spyderco Sharpmaker. If you can hold a blade vertical then you can get a razor sharp knife. Look up the videos on youtube, it truly is one of the easiest systems out there.
 

Draging your knife over the stone backwards is a really bad way to sharpen a knife to potential. The burr will be facing the wrong direction (along the length of the blade) , you'll get a smoother edge when pushing over the stone in direction of the blade, as opposed to dragging it back and forth like sand paper (great way to whittle the blade to nothing though). But for a novice, it's a decent rendition although the reverse blade direction is more efficient. I would not advise a 10-15 degree angle for a novice without a guide, either you'll have a hell of a time attempting to get the bevel even on each side.
