I agree with Rob. Steel Challenge is a great beginner sport and kids LOVE IT. A lot of the world record holders in the sport are teenagers.

Intro to competitive shooting advice

Steel challenge is a great way to get going. It's cheap and easy with .22 LRs, and you can do it with rifles or pistols (or both depending on the venue).
We host a great outlaw match for beginners in Villa Rica. Every third Sunday in of the month, we alternate monthly between carbine only, pistol only, and 2 gun.
We allow coaching and make sure new shooters clear courses safely, and offer more assistance for unscored shooters. We also offer coaching, classes, and range time after the match for a fee. Some people come out to matches and then stay after and practice on the stages. We have a ton of flexibility since the "action challenge match" is our own, and the range is our own.
February 18 we are having a team 2 gun match. March 17 is our Pistol only match (which might be the best option.)
