Get a Choir Boi stainless sink cleaner and run some it down the barrel with your favorite cleaner. I know it will take rust off with damaging the finish. I got mine at the local hardware store in the kitchen section. For a couple of $, did the trick.
When I restore old air guns, I use a 4" x 24" piece of pvc pipe, capped on one end.
Put the whole thing in and fill it up with Evapo-Rust.
Leave it for a few days, while your temper cools down.
It'll dissolve pretty much all of it. No fumes. No caustic properties.
I've used it on many items. I picked airguns as they are usually the worst thing to derust.
