One of the most economical bore cleaners and metal parts cleaners for shotguns is low odor Mineral Spirits or Paint Thinner.

It removes the carbon and plastic build up from barrels and choke tubes.
Soak ported choke tubes in a jar of mineral spirits overnight for easier cleaning.

Once the firearm bore is clean then wipe it down with mineral oil.
Some folks may not be aware that Hoppes gun oil in the orange bottle is mineral oil.
The main ingredient in Ballistol is white mineral oil.

As previously noted, food grade mineral oil can be used as a laxative

Can be used for pistols/revolvers with lead and powder build up ?

Thanks !

Mineral spirits removes the plastic residue of shotshell wads from shotgun barrels and chokes, and also removes lead and powder build up in pistols, revolvers and rifles. Just be careful not to get it on the wood finish. Be sure to lightly oil after cleaning with Mineral Spirits as it will remove the oil.

There are better products for copper fowling than mineral spirits, but if you are only shooting lead then mineral spirits works great and is about 1/10 of the price.
Mineral spirits can be purchased by the quart at the hardware store or big box store for about the same price as a small bottle of bore cleaner.

Mineral oil has been used for decades to clean and lubricate machine parts.
I like the smell of Ballistol and the convenience of the spray can, but a bottle of mineral oil from the grocery store works well and costs about 1/4 of the price :D
