Henry Ruggs III plea deal

Not defending him, but he's not getting off scot-free.

Lost his job.
Lost his career (his rookie contract had another $7 million in compensation, and could have been tens of millions more in the future).
Certainly will face civil suits, if not already facing them.
Probably lost or will lose all the wealth he had at the time of the crime (ballpark $9 million of his initial contract).
Min 3 years, maybe as much as 10 years in prision.
Long term probation if he's released before the full sentence is served.
Felon...forever.
Who knows what kind of family consequences?

That's a hefty of penalty by most measures. Is it fair, in comparison to what the young woman he killed lost? Fair in comparison to what her family lost?

The math on that is inexact.

Almost none of the losses you list are penalties. They're purely incidental. The justice system isn't depriving him of a very comfortable financial future. He did that to himself. The guy's an idiot.

If those losses WERE penalties, and he was in some way even more privileged, the implication is that at some point, all those things he lost were so substantial, that no other penalty imposed by the justice system is necessary. In effect, he "suffered enough".

Medieval societies did away with the concept of weregild. Let's not reintroduce it.

Then you get into the utterly unjust situation where the public has to accept that at a certain point, even if prosecuted and convicted, the defendent can expect to avoid incarceration for an offense that would put you or me into the big house for the rest of our lives.

That's not to say that we don't already see that happening, but let's not make it socially acceptable.

If he gets out of this with only a few years and a big ass fine then that just shows what a joke our justice system has turned into. We got good balls in the internet who are looking at 40 plus years over a stupid piece of metal and this dude literally destroyed lives and he gets off Scott free?
Just think about that mayor of that small town in west ga.. how many teens did he kill while going close to or over 100 mph. In his state patrol car.. he didn’t get ANY JAIL TIME.. and supposedly got voted in as MAYOR..

I think it's interesting the accused can dictate the terms of their sentence when the evidence suggests they're guilty as heck.

What he did wasn't right and he should have been punished and most certainly shouldn't have been able to get into elected office. But the situation was completely different. He wasn't drunk. Just stupid.
