Ham Radio Operators?

Do any of you guys build your own equipment any more? My grandfather was a Ham and built almost all of his stuff.

Is the Ham Radio Outlet worth the drive from Kennesaw once I'm licensed and ready to buy a small, budget friendly home setup? I'll be buying blind, with only my knowledge from the ol' interwebs.

I've been in the store. It seems to have a lot of stuff.
I didn't buy anything, just looking around.

I bought my last transceiver there and they had a very good price. Got the power supply and a new antenna tuner at the same time. They had a great selection, good prices and were knowledgeable about every piece of gear in the store, including the used gear. They have a web site and you can shop there to get an idea of what you might be looking for.

You might also want to check out MFJ they manufacture and sell a whole lot of different Ham gear. I have previously purchased antenna tuners from them and antennas also. They are mail order but ship pretty quickly.

Good luck

getting closer to wanting to take the technicians license test. I'm almost scoring 80% on every practice exam. I want to get that average up to 85% before I go online to take it. I still don't know what the hell I'm doing, but I'll be able to pass the test

It has to be overseen by volunteer licensed operators...but COVID required a shift and from what I've read, while a lot of folks still think in-person is easier, more and more folks are getting licensed online

Any ham radio guys around? Just wondering if there are any local ham operators around. I’m not a ham operator currently but considering purchasing a small unit. Any one have one for sale, or any advice for someone wanting to get started? I know I would need to get a license, but would like to get one to start understanding how it works and listening at least. Thanks.
OP, here's a link to a local club that might be useful. https://wr4mg.us/

I'm too busy to be a club guy, and I like self-study, so I've done it on my own. But most people swear the club interaction is essential for mentoring, and I generally agree. Just know that like all types of clubs, one might be a good fit and the other not so much.

The question is, why ham radio? It's a technical hobby with lots to do for low-tech people like me. But if you're just looking for local commo, you might try something like GMRS which requires a license but no test. The license covers your whole immediate family. It still has rules, but they're not complicated. You just need good-quality radios. Look at the North Georgia GMRS network which has networked repeaters covering a lot of Georgia and neighboring states: https://nggmrs.org/.

Have fun!
