Take a stroll in the parks between Lakeshore Drive and the lake, start at Buckingham Fountain from Married with Children. and head south.

I prefer uber to taxi's up there now.

Great advice above. I’ll ad a few suggestions.

Go to Navy Pier- cool place
Art Instiute of Chicago- one of the best art museums- 100x better than the High museum here in Atlanta

Get pizza and few hotdogs. Can’t miss. Portillos is great- try a Beef Sandwich there, a hotdog and their chocolate cake shake ( no lie..they make the shake with a real piece of chocolate cake)

Buy a bottle of Malort and bring it back. You can only get it in the Chicago area. It is horrible but a Chicago, tradition. Look up Malort face.

Skip the Sears tower and go and have a drink in the bar at the top of the Hancock building, few feet shorter, but a great view and you can get that drink.

I doubt carrying's a good idea, when I lived there, (outside the city), no carry possible, not sure about now.

If staying downtown, watch out you can go 2 blocks ok, the next 2 blocks gang territory...

Ask your hotel what is safe and what is not...

just a simple suggestion to consider, like ATLANTA, only worse...
