Very sorry for your loss. We've always had big pups, so I can't really help. My wife wants a Yorkshire Terrier at some point. They are cute little dogs.

Now we have a Golden Doodle... A little larger (50 pounds) but sweet.

Before this we had Cockapoos... Cocker Spaniel and Doodle.... Small and wonderful

I've had bigger dogs but they need more time and energy which I cannot offer.

One thought: Plenty of available, senior, large and mid-size dogs, typically in the 2nd half of their life, with far less energy than a younger dog.

I've known a few senior adoptee dogs. Unless they were badly abused, they're usually mellow, appreciative, loving companions. The downside is the short time they're with you, and sometimes the increased cost of care.

Adopted a rescue Small Short hair Terrier, female, after years of bigger dogs. First female since 1978. She is 7, had her a year, most affectionate, house broken, not hyper dog I ever had. Hope you find your next "best" soon. Only way to ease the pain of loss.
