I think this practice may be somewhat age related --
if you put hot food into the ice box you would need ice in two days instead of three --
early refridgerators were not as well insulated or efficient and had to work harder to bring down temp --
LOL.. doubt there’s too many on here even seen an ice box.
Used to have the ice man drop off a 25 lb block every couple of days.
 
In my early days I used to work in a lot of resteraunts. We usually let food cool a bit before putting it in the cooler but it wasn't critical.

The important thing was not to cover it completely. You need that cool air to get into the container. We'd usually leave things uncovered or just partially covered until just before we left for the night.
