Best 12 GA Slug or Buckshot load for Deer Hunting?

When I tested buckshot (20 gauge) by shooting it into stacks of soft pine 1/2" and 5/8" thick boards, I was shocked how little penetration it had.
A slug is a much better penetrator.
Before I did my little test, I would have felt comfortable using buckshot on, well, just about anything. Deer. Hogs. Bear in thick woods. Lepards and hyenas on safari in Africa! (Yeah, as if I'd ever get the chance....)
After my test, I think I'll stick to their use on softer targets at very close range only.\
