Anybody ever chop down a piston barrel?

hey folks,

I have a lower I am planning to form 1 and a spare Lmt 16” piston barrel I’d like to chop down to maybe 12.5” and snag a shovel nose stripped upper for. I understand gas feeds through the gas tube and cycles the piston but don’t understand if that happens before or after the bullet pass by the gas ports. Anybody ever chopped a piston barrel 3-4” and had it run fine after?
