Anyone know any tricks or tips to remove one of these rascals without the key? It’s plastic and I’m sure I can mongo this thing off with a big pair of channel locks, but I’d rather not chance a bunch of plastic pieces in the almost empty gas tank.

Had that problem once with a fleet vehicle someone lost the key for (it had been parked for a long time). Wrote down the make and key number from the cap, drove around to several auto parts stores until I found the same one with matching key number.

I can’t afford to pop caps anymore. Cost almost as much as damn eggs!

Hold a vacuum nozzle next to the cap to catch the pieces while you smash it with a hammer. Bonus points if you miss and hit the body hard enough to spark.
