I sold both my 22 magnum handgun and my 22 magnum varmint rifle a couple years ago, so this doesn't affect me personally.... but all I gotta say is
holy $£!] look at the price of 22 WMR ammo!

And this is at Walmart which normally has the best prices!!!

Yes, that's $30 for 50 rounds.

I'm used to paying that kind of a price for 45 ACP ammo, or 357 magnum, but not any rimfire cartridge!

Manufacturers are too busy cranking out the popular calibers to waste time on slow movers such as 22 WMR and .410 shotgun.
Accordingly, the price is tied to availability.
Just think about trying to find .35 Remington or 16 gauge.

Haven't seen any 35 in forever, but do see some 16 from time to time. One round I see almost all the time is 28 gauge. Hmm.

Yes, I have shied away from .35 Marlin lever guns due to the ammo. Never had a .35 before, I don't reload now, but the itch to get something funky hit me, until the price hit me harder on the ammo!!!
